The reason I slip the stitch is because it gives it a cleaner edge but if you're putting fringe on it it will be covered up. When you say different do you mean overall the stitch pattern looks different? If so are you only repeating what's between the *'s? Only repeat yo, k2tog and you should be good. Hope this helps!
