The pattern says to cast on 56 stitches. As far as the yarn used, any yarn that will give you the gauge of what's stated in the pattern will work. The Lions Brand yarn I used is a heavier worsted weight (3oz/103yds) but I used a 10.5 US needle. You could use any yarn needle combination but to make any adjustments again one should do a gauge swatch or not totally up to you ;) This is a pattern that you can follow to the letter or use as a guide, open to your interpretation. I'm not sure what you mean in regards to the slipped stitch. The slipped stitch edge is there to make it easier to crochet around the blanket when finishing. Hope this helps! It's pretty basic math... take your gauge and multiply it by the width you would like. If you are getting 3 sts to the inch and want it 32" then multiply 3x32"=96 BUT keep in mind the stitch pattern is a multiple of 4. Since 96 is divisible by 4 that works so you can cast on 96sts. Say you came up with a number not divisible by 4 then either round up or down so it is. Hope this helps!
